ARTIST'S NOTES

Mary's angelic news was given to her alone. Afterwards, she waited alone for the way forward to manifest, not knowing for sure if Joseph would honor his marriage intentions. Mary journeyed alone to visit her cousin Elizabeth. I wonder what Mary might have shared with her son about this isolated time in her life when she was alone with her calling. Her experiences mirror what her child would be called to do. Jesus was alone in the desert. He prayed alone in the night and left his followers and the crowds to be alone with his Father. I wonder if she taught him to turn towards solitude as a way of discerning God's will.

The lush layers of greens symbolize the journey of her growth. The serene blue at the top of Mary's head suggests her introspection and tranquility. The nuanced interplay of these colors conveys a sense of renewal and optimism.
