The Angel Gabriel addressed Mary as "Full of Grace", or in Latin "Immaculata". This is taken by many Christians to suggest that Mary was free from all sin, or in other words, immaculate.
The deep swirling colors around Mary's head suggest the supernatural way Mary was gifted by God. The bits of gold to suggest the holy presence she experienced. The graphite marks in the under layer of her face suggest the spiritual mystery that marked Mary.
