Sancta Maria means Saint Mary, or Holy Mary. In historic church tradition, a saint is one who was known to have a great degree of holiness or was set apart for God’s special purposes.
In this work we see Mary who's life was touched by the light of heaven. This painting began the way iconography is painted, starting with a dark surface, but then we see Mary and Jesus being touched with light, and how it illuminates the shapes of their faces.
This painting also reflects our real lives, the need to linger in the light so that our faces reflect the true light.
