ARTIST'S NOTES
Of all the people ever visited by an angel, Mary has the best story, the most interesting story. We know the parts of her story that were included in the Gospels. But as someone who was visited in a unique and powerful way and told that she was going to conceive a baby, there are so many details that we have no clue about.
I wonder if she told her son stories about that night, and if they were his favorite bedtime stories. In the dark, she might have explained what it felt like to first be afraid, then to trust, and finally, to have faith. I wonder if she explained the sensation of being in the angel's presence. Did she find words to adequately explain the experience of the Holy Spirit visiting her, the power of God overshadowing her? I wonder if her stories passed on to her son a sense of wonder and trust that he carried forward in his life and ministry.
The print of this painting captures the subtle dark shades and quiet conversation between mother and child, which I created using acrylic paint and torn papers.
