The title, "Theotokos" comes from the Greek and means the "bearer" or" mother" of God.
Who Mary was and how the church was to remember her were agreed upon in the year 431 at a Church council that met in Ephesus.
A complex relationship between Mary, Jesus, and the Church began very early on and continues today. For many people from protestant and more recent steams of faith, Mary's role and example are new and fresh.
My largest painting to date, and in it, Mary is seen as a towering figure with the largest destiny given to any human, male or female.
Multiple layers of collage give the surface texture, pointing to the dimensions of Mary's life and ministry as the Theotokos.
