After practicing traditional iconography and contemplating the historic and contemporary theology about Mary, I found myself painting this image to extend our understand of who she is.
Mary overwhelms the canvas and pushes our boundaries of comfort. Utilizing byzantine-influenced proportions, deconstructed bits of gold leaf, and subtle collage elements as undertones, her complexity and boldness is amplified – reflecting her Magnificat proclamation. She asserts her chosen-ness and spiritual prominence, embodying the promise that God will raise up the lowly and bring down the powerful.
There is no effort to capture Mary's likeness in a conventional portrait; rather this work reflects a manifestation of her being, inviting us to contemplate her character on a deeper level.
