Mary as the Mother of God, or Mater Dei in Latin, has always reminded us of the mystery of the Incarnation: that Jesus is fully human and fully divine.
This painting reminds describes the human-ness of both Mary and Jesus. Not meant to be particularly pretty or beautiful, but reflecting their day-to-day life.
When "the word became flesh and dwelt among us" Mary was a real woman who gave birth to a real human baby.
Layers of collage papers from books, maps, and circles of gold paper, peek out in areas underneath the painting. These common elements are a reminder that for many years, Mary lived a life raising her son that was very much common, filled with learning, journeying, and occasionally a glimpse of heavenly purpose.
